Why Choose IELTS?
IELTS (International English language Testing System is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 2 million tests taken in the last year. The test is made up of 4 parts – Listening (30mins), Reading (60mins), Writing (60mins) & Speaking (~15mins). In total the test is 2hours 45 mins.
There are two types of the IELTS test: Academic & General.
Here at Capital School of English we focus on the Academic IELTS test however, the skills you learn can be used for the General IELTS test.
If you want to study at pre-sessional, undergraduate or postgraduate level in an English-speaking country, you will need Academic IELTS. IELTS is accepted by most universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand . It is also accepted by thousands of US universities, including Ivy League institutions.

IELTS vs Cambridge English - What's the difference?
IELTS (International English language Testing System is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 2 million tests taken in the last year. The test is made up of 4 parts: Listening (30mins), Reading (60mins), Writing (60mins) & Speaking (~15mins). In total the test is 2hours 45 mins. Your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for 2 years.
Cambridge English First (FCE), Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE) Exams are used to demonstrate your ability to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study on courses taught in English. These tests are also made up of 4 parts: Reading & Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The total time for the exam varies from 3hours 30mins (FCE) to 4 hours (CPE)
Your Cambridge English certificate does not expire. Recognising organisations such as universities, colleges and employers can choose how long to accept results for, so make sure you always check their requirements.
IELTS for UKVI
In the UK there are 2 types of IELTS test:
1. The standard IELTS test (General or Academic) you can take at any one of 50 test centres across the UK.
2. If you are thinking about going on to study at a UK university you may be asked to show your level of English by taking an IELTS for UKVI test. This test is specifically for UK Visa applications and can only be taken at 10 centres throughout the UK.
- If you are going to study a pre-sessional course you will need to take IELTS for UKVI.
- If you are going straight to a BA, BSc, MA, or MSc the university will tell you which test you need to take.
