OET - The English language test for healthcare professionals in the UK

Because OET (Occupational English Test)  is an exam tailored to assess the language skills of healthcare professionals, which enables them to register and practice in an English speaking environment.

Each part of the OET exam is related to real workplace scenarios for healthcare professionals. It assesses abilities to communicate effectively in context. The language tested is targeted and relevant and so it promotes confidence when working in English.

The OET consists of 4 sub-tests, reading, writing, listening and speaking, and nurses and doctors wishing to work in the UK are required to score at least a grade B in each.

OET is recognised by regulatory healthcare bodies in the UK, The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Medical Council (GMC) as well as in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UAE and Namibia.

OET is available in over 40 countries worldwide and there are 14 test venues in the UK, with test dates every month. The nearest test centres to Bournemouth are Bristol, Portsmouth and London.

Capital School of English have previously provided specialised English for nursing courses with Bournemouth and Poole Healthcare Trust, and worked with Dorset Healthcare Trust to prepare students to take the IELTS exam.

OET with its focus on contextualising the English needed to pass the exam, for the healthcare profession, has produced a test which will not only progress careers, but also promote confidence in using the language in workplace scenarios.

Capital School of English has trained with OET to become a Preliminary Preparation Provider for the test, to enable the school to provide a quality teaching experience for their students and optimise their opportunity for success.

Capital School of English are offering one-week intensive OET test preparation courses for Nursing. These are courses designed for candidates with the required language level to work through each of the four sub-tests that make up the OET exam: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. The course provides familiarisation, specialised, strategic input and practise for each paper to allow every candidate to maximise their potential when sitting the test.

The course includes 20 hours of face to face tuition with qualified, very experienced teachers, as well as 5 hours of tutored self study to give individualised feedback and the opportunity to address weak points as the course progresses. A resourced self-study area also allows access to practise exercises, tests and language resources throughout the week.

There are a maximum of 10 students on each course and they run from Monday-Friday from 9.00am – 2.45pm, with resourced self-study facilities available until 5.00pm. Courses are programmed to coincide with the OET exam, which can be taken on the Saturday directly after the course at a centre of your choice. Easily accessible centres from Bournemouth are in Portsmouth and London.
